The Fourth of July is quickly approaching! Have you started planning what you're going to make for the holiday yet? If you haven't started planning your menu yet, don't stress! I've got lots of easy and delicious vegan Fourth of July recipe ideas for you to try!

Let's start with these super simple red, white, and blue skewers! The combination of sweet watermelon (red), salty vegan feta cheese (white), and tart blueberries (blue) is so delicious and it's the perfect festive appetizer to serve for at your Fourth of July party, BBQ, or potluck.

How to Pick the Best Watermelon

Before you make the vegan skewers, you need to pick out the perfect watermelon. There are a few important things to look for when you pick out a watermelon:

  1. Shape - Round watermelons taste sweeter than the long, oblong watermelons.
  2. Field spot - The white/yellow spot on the bottom of the watermelon is called the field spot. The field spot is the side that the watermelon laid on in the field where it grew. Look for a watermelon that has a golden yellow spot, not a white spot.
  3. Webbing - You want to look for the watermelon that has the most webbing or sugar lines. The more sugar lines the watermelon has, the sweeter it tastes.
  4. Sound - When you tap a watermelon, it should sound hollow inside. The hollow sound means it's ripe and ready to eat!

How to Make Vegan Skewers

Start by cutting a small watermelon into slices and then use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out 24 watermelon stars. Next, cut a block of vegan feta cheese into small cubes.

Hold the toothpick with one hand and use your other hand to slide the watermelon star on first, and then slide the blueberry on the skewer. Lastly, add the chunk of vegan feta on the end of the skewer but don't push it all the way through or it may crack. Arrange the skewers on a platter and garnish with a drizzle of balsamic glaze.

Can You Make it in Advance?

You can make the vegan skewers the day before and store them in an airtight container in the fridge. When you're ready to serve the skewers, arrange them on a platter, and garnish with a drizzle of balsamic glaze.

How Long Does it Last in the Refrigerator?

Store the skewers in an airtight container and they will stay fresh in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Substitutions & FAQ

  • Watermelon Substitution: You could use strawberries instead of watermelon. It may be a little bit more difficult to cut the stars out of strawberry slices, but if you use large strawberries then you should be able to do it.
  • Blueberry Substitutions: Instead of blueberries, you could use blackberries or black grapes. The color is a little darker but it would be fine in a pinch.
  • Vegan Feta Substitution: If you're not a fan of feta, you could substitute chunks of white dragon fruit or baked tofu.
  • Do I Have to Use Store-Bought Vegan Feta? I used store-bought Violife vegan feta cheese because it's convenient and delicious. If you'd rather make homemade vegan feta cheese, try this recipe.
  • What Type of Cookie Cutter Should I Use? A small, 1-inch star-shaped cookie cutter is the perfect size to use for the watermelon stars.

Success Tips

  • Use a star cookie cutter, it will save you so much time! You can cut the watermelon stars out by hand, but it's very time intensive.
  • Be gentle with the vegan feta because it crumbles easily. That's why I didn't try to stick the toothpick all the way thorough the chunk of feta because it will break apart. Simply stick the toothpick or skewer in far enough just to secure it, but don't push it all the way through.
  • Store the leftover skewers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
